STEM Fields Offer Expanded Job Opportunities

Individuals with skills in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) are in high demand. The demand for these skilled workers is closely linked to global competitiveness. A STEM-skilled workforce will secure the health and longevity of the economy and can be an employment differentiator for these workers.

Students enrolled at White Mountains Community College (WMCC) have access to a broad range of STEM degree and certificate offerings. Choose from automotive, environmental and information technology degrees to certificates in cybersecurity, mobile equipment, water quality and welding, among others. Earning a degree or certificate in one of these STEM areas can prepare you for employment or to continue your studies at a four-year institution.

Special STEM Programs at WMCC
WMCC is committed to expanding STEM programs for students of all ages, from middle-school students to college students. Some of our programs include:

Collaborative STEM Research Programs
Through the NH Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NH EPSCoR), WMCC students in the Environmental Resources program are involved with albedo data collection for the Community Collaborative Rain Hale and Snow network and water quality data collection through the NH LoVoTECS network. Lotic Volunteer Network uses sensors to record temperature, electrical conductivity, and stage (TECS). Data collected through these collaborative relationships are used in Spatial Information Technology coursework.

STEM Research Internships
WMCC Environmental Science and Environmental Technology majors can apply for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) internship through NH EPSCoR to collect data for a short-term research project. In the summer of 2013, the first year the internship was available, a WMCC student collaborated with the NH Fish and Game Department to evaluate the Upper and Middle Ammonoosuc watersheds for habitat quality and brook trout presence.

Women in Science and Technology Forums
At WMCC’s Women in Science and Technology forum each spring, New England women with careers in these fields talk with local high school girls about science and technology careers.

STEM Summer Camp
Each summer at our STEM camp, local middle-school students dismantle and reconfigure computers, create and run Lego robots, build toothpick bridges using real-world bridge designs, learn about veterinary medicine, handle brook trout while learning about water quality, and build and launch rockets.
