Forest Information Technology

Forest Information Technology Home Page

The skills needed by today's foresters are very different from those needed ten to twenty years ago. In addition to a strong foundation in forest ecosystem ecology and practical skills in the treatment of forest stands, today's foresters also need to utilize computer technologies such as computerized mapping, global positioning systems, and geographic information systems. These technologies are used in generating high quality maps and managing spatial land information such as timber inventories, road maintenance plans and wildlife population monitoring.

The Forest Information Technology concentration (an option within the Spatial Information Technology Program) trains technicians in electronic data capture, and manipulation and analysis to support decision-making by a professional forester. Students spend extensive laboratory time on outdoor exercises and at the computer.

The College is ideally located within the most forested county in the state where forest management activities and operations, research facilities, and large forest products companies are readily available for the students to tour and learn first-hand. The College's own 325 acre environmental study area affords students an opportunity for ample field work.

Graduates have strong skills in forest and timber inventory, automated mapping, and managing land information systems.
