The Alumni of White Mountains Community College
Gail Aloisio
Hi Peg,
Thank you! I'm pretty astounded at my new lot in life, and can't thank you enough for helping me get here! I did not know very much about regional planning until I started to learn how GIS could be utilized by small governments and the organizations that serve them. The interdisciplinary applications of GIS helped me discover the interdisciplinary nature of regional planning. And the contacts I made at the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission directly supported my hire here, at the Northeastern Vermont Development Association!
I don't get to do all GIS, because we already have a house GIS Specialist, but he is very busy, and I've already been assigned a project to help him out. I'll be making point location maps for a Northeast Kingdom wide Food System Plan. We have an Excel database of farms, food processors/value adders, farmer's markets, CSA's, farm stands, etc., with addresses. So I've been playing around with Joining Tables and Geocoding Addresses to see how many of these places we can locate at the address level. Vermont has a shapefile of points for every housing unit, business, and institution you can imagine, as part of their E911 system. That is my reference data.
Our executive director recognizes that GIS will be increasingly important in town and regional planning, so he specifically cited my GIS skills as a reason for hiring me.
I hope your students are doing great! If any of them would ever like to speak to someone who went through WMCC's program and went on to do a GIS related job, I'd be very happy to speak to them. Or if there are any other ways I can help out the program as an alumna, let me know. All of my contact information is in my signature below.
Take care!Gail Aloisio
