It’s Nearly Summer at White Mountains Community College
Katharine Eneguess, President of White Mountains Community CollegeRecently we had our first few days of summer weather here at the White Mountains Community College, and while the temperatures have moderated a bit now, dipping back down into normal ranges, the hot weather was a clear reminder that summer is on the way.
Summer starts early here at our Berlin campus and at our academic centers in Conway, Littleton, and Woodsville. Most of our summer courses start in late May, though more than a few start in late June, with several beginning in July. This year at our Berlin campus we are offering over 50 credit courses during the summer in subject areas from Accounting to Office Management and Medical Transcription. For students who want to devote their full academic attention to earning their required mathematics credits, we are offering seven courses, including Introduction to Algebra and Topics in Applied College Mathematics.
One of our course offerings is Introductory English I, which runs from June 22 through August 10, and meets Monday and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Our Intro to Algebra starts on June 23 and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. through August 11. Classes in Introduction to PowerPoint and Introduction to Spreadsheets don't start until July. Typically, classes start the last week in May. Literary Journalism begin May 26 and meets Tuesday and Thursdays through July 14.
At our Conway, Littleton, and Woodsville Academic Centers we have similar course offerings, with over 20 summer courses in each location. Be sure to check out our non-credit offerings, too, all of which can be viewed at www.wmcc.edc/courses/. Of particular interest is our course eBay 101: Introduction to Online Auctions, taught over two days at both our Conway and Littleton Academic Centers.
There is still time to sign up for the non-credit one-day course Customer Service Certificate, presented by Carl Lindblade, who, among his other accomplishments in his long career in customer service, served as the general manager of The Red Jacket in North Conway for many years and now is on the faculty of UNH . This course is on Monday, July 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at our Berlin campus. Professional bartender Helen Tardiff is teaching Bartending on June 1, 2, and 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. each of those nights. This will be held at the Eagle’s Club in Berlin. Besides learning the principles of mixology, students will learn the current serving laws, stocking systems, customer service, and wet bar techniques.
We also have a full slate of course offerings that you can take while comfortably sunning in your beach chair. Our online courses begin May 26, so you can enjoy the warmer weather and take Legal & Ethical Issues in Healthcare, or one of our other 20 online courses.
The summer semester allows you to earn credits outside of the normal academic cycle. Perhaps it's a class you've put off taking, or an interesting elective you need to fill out your course load. Whatever the reason, it may be summer, but the academic vigor is the same. Many students who attend college out-of-town take advantage of our summer courses, then transfer their credits back to their home institution. It's a great way to make up credits you are missing, or get a jump start on your next semester and in most cases, you will save money by enrolling at WMCC.
Enrollment for our summer courses is open now until the first week of classes. Our main campus is located at 2020 Riverside Drive in Berlin. Our Conway center is located off of Route 16 at 53 Technology Lane. In Littleton we are at 646 Main Street, in Woodsville at 9 High Street. For more information explore this website.
