Check Out the New and Really Cool Interactive Site for Transfer Credits

Katharine Eneguess, President of White Mountains Community College

In these tight economic times we've all gotten a little more conscientious when it comes to shopping, making sure that the money we spend is for something that will be worthwhile in the long run. As you know, earning a degree or certificate from White Mountains Community College is a good investment. We offer a quality education at an affordable price. Many of our associate degrees and certificates can be used right away to get you a better, higher paying job than a high school diploma would.

If you plan to pursue a four-year degree, then the transferability of credits earned at the community college level is very important to you. That transferability is important to us, too, and we have worked for several years now with the University System of New Hampshire, and other colleges, to make sure that our course credits are accepted at those institutions.

The NH Transfer web site (www.NHTransfer.org) has an interactive program to help you chart your educational path. We are now providing an online course equivalency database that further simplifies that process. The University System of New Hampshire, the Community College System of New Hampshire, and two private colleges, Franklin Pierce College and Southern New Hampshire University have partnered to provide this data.

The site lets you choose from a pull-down menu of participating institutions to submit the names of the colleges or universities that you plan on transferring from and to. Once you’ve submitted that information, the site jumps to a course look-up page. Enter the course ID in the box provided and the equivalency results for that course pop up.

For example, if you're thinking of taking Cultural Anthropology: Faces of Culture at White Mountains Community College, a three-credit Humanities course, then you would put the course ID for that course, BANT101, in the box and press enter. To try it out, we put in White Mountains Community College for the sending institution, and chose "all institutions" for our transfer possibilities. The results were instantaneous, and we learned that we could use the credits earned from that course, as long as we received a minimum grade of C, to fulfill general education requirements at all the sending institutions. For instance, at the University of New Hampshire the course would go toward the credits needed in the area of Foreign Culture. At Granite State College, the course can be used to fulfill requirements in the areas of Global Perspectives or Social Science.

The site provides links to all the institutions involved in this effort, so it easy to shop around and find out what those institutions have to offer. Our website is among those linked. You can easily find the IDs for all our courses here at the college by going to the course catalog page.

If you are already a student in one of the participating institutions, then you can evaluate your transcript for the transferability of courses in which you have earned credits. The site can also recommend transfer programs for each major offered at the four-year institutions.

We are very excited about this great addition to the www.NHTransfer.org site. It gives those we serve , YOU, yet another tool to use as you plan your future. We strongly urge you to check out the site, whether you are a student here at White Mountains Community College or thinking about becoming a student. It’s really pretty cool!
