Summer Is Knocking On The Door at WMCC

Katharine Eneguess, President of White Mountains Community College

Spring came early this year, with a couple of warm spells in late March and early April that sped up the annual thawing process. Ice out at New Hampshire's bodies of water came the earliest it had in 15 years. Lakes and ponds thawed so quickly that more than one ice-angler was too late in getting on late winter's ice, and had to watch from shore as their bob houses listed sideways and then disappeared through the softening ice.

Though the snow has hung tough in the higher elevations, in the valleys it disappeared pretty early. That early disappearance, along with a couple of stretches of summer-like weather, got people out raking winter's debris off their lawns in early April. I don't think I've ever seen the North Country's front yards looking this good, this early. Judging from the amount of work area residents have already put into their gardens, it should be a bountiful year for both flowers and vegetables. And with the new farmers market in downtown Berlin, I am looking forward to the variety of the bounty.

We're always a little bit ahead of the times here at White Mountains Community College. We're finishing up our spring semester at our campus in Berlin and at our academic centers in Littleton, Conway, and Woodsville. Before you know it, our students will have passed in their last papers, taken their final exams, and be looking forward to a break in their academic pursuits. Nearly 180 of our students will be graduating in May, and no doubt many of them are looking forward to going to work in their degree area, while others are preparing to enter a 4-year college or university.

We get a jump on summer, too, with our summer semester classes starting in late May or early June, which is still technically spring in calendar terms. Our summer semester can allow you to get a jump on your college education or if you are a student from another college, allows you to take a course and transfer the credits in the fall. At our Berlin campus, our Liberal Arts course selections for the summer range from Introductory English to Microbiology. Our Program Course offerings include Juvenile Justice Administration and Wireless Networking and Security. All told, there are nearly 40 courses from which to choose.

At our Littleton Academic Center you can get started on your college career by taking Introductory Mathematics, or further your career by taking Intermediate Accounting. Several courses are offered in Massage Therapy, including the relaxing sounding Deep Tissue Massage. Several of the North Country's larger hotels have added spas in the last few years, others are planning to follow suit, so there are some good job opportunities in the region.

Among the summer courses we offer at the Woodsville Academic Center are Sign Language 1 and Understanding Children with Special Needs. Choices at the Conway Academic Center include Survey of American Literature and Web Design I. We also offer over a dozen online summer courses that you can participate in from the comfort of your home, on your schedule.

In terms of weather, we can't predict what this summer will bring. We're hoping that it's a tad drier than last summer, and sunnier. We can predict, with astonishing accuracy, that whatever the summer brings for weather, it will be dry and sunny in our classrooms at White Mountains Community College. Hope to see you whatever the weather!
