Peter Randall to speak on N.H. Then and Now

Award-winning photographer, author, and publisher Peter Randall will be at the White Mountains Community College Fortier Library on Wednesday, April 22nd at 5 p.m. to discuss the New Hampshire, Then and Now exhibit currently on display at the library. The exhibit is based on Randall's book of the same name and features 40 pairs of photographs of unique places, people, and events that depict the character and culture of New Hampshire, past and present. It gives visitors a diverse visual overview of New Hampshire, comparing sites and people across the state, between the late 19th century and today.

Randall started this project by searching through the New Hampshire Historical Society's extensive collection of historical photographs. He then set out to find the modern sites, taking photographs of the same places. The exhibit, like the book, uses the powerful medium of photography to help visitors explore changes that have occurred in New Hampshire over the last century. For example, until 1883, a huge boulder was lodged between the narrow walls of the Flume in Franconia Notch, when it was washed away in a heavy rain storm. A circa 1880 view of the Flume with the boulder is paired with a photo of how the Flume looks today.

Randall will discuss the book and the exhibition, and illustrate changes in New Hampshire's built and natural landscape through the use of historic and contemporary images.

The exhibit, which is on loan from the New Hampshire Historical Society, with funding in part by Northeast Delta Dental, will be on display at the White Mountains Community College through May 8th. The library is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m, Friday from 7:30 a.m to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
