NH Community Technical College at Berlin Holds Orientation Session

Anxious students were welcomed with open arms at the New Hampshire Community College last Wednesday for orientation. Over 70 students, some accompanied by parents or other guests, walked through the halls of the college, attended workshops and met program advisors, who helped them register to start classes on September 7.

The day began with a brief welcome from Martha Laflamme, Vice President of Student and Corporate Affairs. Laflamme explained what the students could expect to gain from the orientation activities, and gave them some sound advice regarding how to be a successful student. The students and their guests then participated in a series of four workshops. The 'College Success & Academic Support' workshop provided students with a tour of the ever-growing learning center; the 'Student Services' workshop focused on topics including counseling, sports, and activities; the 'Library Services' workshop detailed services available through the Guy Fortier Library; and the 'Financial Aid & Financial Planning' workshop focused on federal financial aid guidelines and pertinent information such as payment plans, and deadlines for adding and dropping classes.

After learning the how-to's of surviving freshman year, the students attended the registration session while Vice President Laflamme met with parents who had additional questions or concerns. "For many of the parents, this is the first child they are sending off to college. Traditionally, the questions focus on housing issues and topics such as college attendance policies, and extra curricular activities," said Laflamme.

The day was capped off with a lunch provided by the college, pictures for photo ID's and locker assignments. Booths were also set up throughout the day in the cafeteria with information including courses, sports sign-up, housing lists and maps of the area, and on-campus childcare.

"This was the last of three orientation sessions the College hosted this summer," said Laflamme. "We are gearing up to welcome over 400 freshmen on the first day of classes. Our total student count is approaching 800 for the fall, but we can always accommodate more!" Laflamme noted. Anyone interested in beginning classes on September 7 is urged to contact the Admissions Office at 752-1113 or 800-445-4525.
