CCSNH-Berlin Student to Submit Sustainable Development Plan for Berlin
Sue Lynn Thyng, a student in the Geographic Information System (GIS) program at CCSNH-Berlin, is creating a hypothetical comprehensive plan for the future of Berlin based on the city's need for sustainable development. Thyng will be working with the premise of replacing the Burgess Mill with an industrial park that would attract new businesses that are in the growth sector of the economy. Her plan would create a partnership between the new residents of the industrial park and CCSNH-Berlin. It would be the college's role to provide potential employees with the needed levels of high-tech training that these new industry partners would require.
Thyng's plan will present an industrial park with the kind of amenities that will attract new industry. Integrated into her design will be recreational opportunities such as running/walking paths, winter ski trails, picnic areas, and landscaping that will give the area a feeling more park like than industrial. There will also be services like daycare incorporated into the industrial park. The plan would use the existing hydroelectric plant at the site to provide low cost energy for the industrial park.
Using GIS mapping technology Thyng will be able to show Berlin as it exists today with the Burgess mill in place and then show what it could look like ten years from now if the mill was replaced by a well planned and aesthetically pleasing industrial park. Once the plan is completed it will be submitted to a program called "My Community, Our Earth" which has been organized by the Association of American Geographers, the National Geographic Society, the United Nations Environment Program and a number of other agencies and organizations. If selected Thyng's plan could be displayed at a number of international conferences and expositions during the next year.
