What is in a name? OUR FUTURE

Katharine Eneguess, President of the New Hampshire Community College - Berlin

Calling all creative minds--alumni, community members, friends of our College! The New Hampshire Community College is soliciting ideas for a new name, and we want your ideas.

This past July, legislation was approved permitting self-governance of our Community College System through its Board of Trustees. The New Hampshire Community Technical College System is now the Community College System of New Hampshire. Now it is our turn, at our campus.

Back in 1966, when the College in Berlin first opened its doors, educational opportunities were geared to vocational/technical areas. In the past 41 years, we have evolved into a comprehensive community technical college, with transfer opportunities and articulation agreements for our students to continue their education at four year institutions across the state and the country.

The CCSNH Chancellor and Board of Trustees support the Colleges considering name changes and have set some boundaries. They ask that we consider the regional “claims” of the other six community colleges within our system ( Concord, Laconia, Stratham, Nashua, Manchester and Claremont) and that we actively engage the internal and external college community in this process. The words “community college” will be included in each proposed name. Ultimately, the name change will be approved by the Board of Trustees, as well as by the Governor and Executive Council.

A new name is a huge and important decision that will affect our campus and our region for years to come. We need your ideas! Please give some serious thought to a new name. And while doing so, take into consideration the main areas we service, Route 25 and north, to the Canadian border. Our main campus is in Berlin and our academic centers are in Conway, Littleton, and Woodsville. Ideally, a new name would be inclusive of most of this part of New Hampshire. Some of the more popular suggestions to date include White Mountains Community College, Northern New Hampshire Community College, and North Country Community College. We know there are many more options out there, and we would like to hear them. So put your thinking caps on and forward your suggestions. Please ask your friends and family to do the same.

We are under a tight timeframe to consider a new name. The final choice must be submitted to our Board of Trustees at their December meeting, and then to the Governor and Council. Our deadline to submit suggested names has been set at November 7, 2007.

Please email your suggestions to Martha Laflamme, Vice President of Student and Community Affairs at mlaflamme@ccsnh.edu, or complete our on-line survey at www.berlin.ccsnh.edu.

Thank you for playing a role in such an important decision! We look forward to receiving some creative suggestions.
