The Benefits of a Non-Traditional Career—no matter what your age!

Katharine Eneguess, President of the New Hampshire Community College - Berlin

Have you ever thought about pursuing a career that is underrepresented by your gender? Did you know that by choosing to enter a non-traditional career field, you may receive greater benefits than if you choose a traditional career path? There is a misconception in society that working in a field that is traditionally dominated by the opposite sex will only lead to discrimination and tough working conditions. If you are someone who has not followed a non-traditional career path because of these misconceptions, then keep reading! Educational institutions, private businesses, and state and federal governments are offering more benefits than ever to individuals who choose to pursue careers in fields non-traditional for their gender.

So what are some other advantages to entering a career that is underrepresented for your gender? There are many! First and foremost, individuals in non-traditional careers can enter the workforce quickly and tend to start higher than entry level. This is because many companies are looking to even out the distribution of males and females that they employ. Non-traditional careers also offer expanding job availability. These careers are generally in fields that are growing in demand, and therefore there are many new positions being created.

Educational institutions, the government, and private agencies also offer grants, scholarships, and tuition reimbursements to students and employees in non-traditional career fields. AAUW (American Association of University Women) is one organization that is very active in promoting the ongoing academic and professional progress of women. The AAMN (American Assembly for Men in Nursing) is a very active organization that helps men who would like to pursue nursing careers. NHCC-Berlin offers a scholarship to a student who is enrolled in a non-traditional program for his or her gender.

So are you thinking that with all of the benefits, a career that is underrepresented for your gender may be a good choice for you? First, you need to identify your interests. If the career that you are interested in is non-traditional for your gender, know that you have a choice and you can succeed in that field. The next step is to find a training program in that career field. NHCC-Berlin has many Associate Degree programs available in non-traditional fields. If you find something that interests you, find out what it is going to take to be successful in that program. Once you’ve completed a training program and have the skills to succeed in your non-traditional career, begin looking for job openings and opportunities. Keep in touch with any individuals you met during your training program, especially program coordinators and instructors. They can be an excellent resource for the future.

NHCC-Berlin can prepare you for a future in a non-traditional field by offering the training or associate degree program that you are looking for. Feel free to stop by or call for more information, 603-752-1113.
