Want to Get a Really Good Tan this Summer?

Katharine Eneguess, President of White Mountains Community College

Crack open a book while you catch some rays. Whether your idea of summer relaxation includes time by the pool, lake, or river, that downtime doesn't have to mean your brain is on vacation. Take a step outside the normal hustle and bustle of your life and take a course at White Mountains Community College in Berlin or at one of our academic centers in Conway, Littleton, or Woodsville.

Now is the time to sign up for summer classes at White Mountains Community College. Classes start on May 27 and run through August 22. Some have a delayed start, and some run for shorter durations, depending upon the course. So there will still be time for rest and relaxation! Classes generally meet two times a week for a total of five hours of classroom time each week. We also are offering 19 classes online, most of which are aimed at education professionals or those going into the field.

There are several advantages to taking a course or two in the summer.

If you're already enrolled in the college, taking a course during our summer semester can lessen your academic load for the rest of the school year. Among the courses we offer in the summer are College Mathematics and College Composition. Taking these courses in the summer, both of them building blocks for a sound college career, allows you to concentrate your mental energies on these subjects, mastering the subjects at time when the class instructors also have a lighter academic load. The teachers on our faculty are always ready to help out students, all year round, but in the summer they have fewer classes to teach.

Summer is also a great time to take a class for the simple pleasure of learning. If you are a little tired of presidential primary politics, but are still interested in social and political doings, why not take Western Civilization II? This course, which is 100 percent online, traces the evolution of cultural political and religious thought of Western Civilization from 1500 to the present. If you want to know how we, in the West, got from absolute monarchies to the representational governments we have now, this is the course for you. It might help you put all the present day politics into perspective.

Another advantage to taking classes in the summer is the weather. Unless the planet all of a sudden turns topsy-turvy, you won't have to worry about classes being cancelled because of a winter snowstorm. Many of our classes meet in the late afternoon, or early evening when the soft breezes of summer waft down the valleys through the mountains.

At our Conway Academic Center we are offering six non-credit courses that meet for shorter periods. If you've ever thought about making money through online auctions, you might want to consider taking eBay 101 Introduction of Online Auctions. In this course, which meets May 31 and June 7, you will learn how to assess a value to your goods, how to list them, sell them, close the deal, and ship and get paid for your items. The cost of the course is only $50, a small price to pay for the potential to make money on eBay.

So, check us out to see what we have going for the summer. This could be your best summer yet!
