WMCC Student Sarah Tucker Wins National GIS Competition!
WMCC GIS graduate Sarah Tucker won first place in the first annual GeoTech Center National Geospatial Skills Competition! The competition was open to all community college students in the nation who had taken any course work in GIS. Phase one was an online exam based on the new Department of Labor Geospatial Competency Model. Students attaining a 70% or higher were eligible to submit a 5 minute video summarizing their project. A panel of professional GIS users and educators selected the top 6 videos. Finalists received a $2000 stipend to attend the Esri International User Conference in San Diego where they each gave a 5 minute presentation summarizing their projects. Sarah's was voted by the audience as the top presentation. She was awarded a plaque and will be invited to future GeoTech events showcasing student projects in specific application areas.
Also of note is that WMCC GIS student Ryan Sutton's map submission was nominated from a field of thousands for best analytic display.
