White Mountains Community College Receives Grant from Walmart

L-R: Student Dawn Wise; Melanie Collins, WMCC Littleton Program Coordinator; Michelle Potteiger, Walmart Representative; and Student Peg Ramback.

Last spring, students in the Technical Writing course at White Mountains Community College-Littleton Academic Center were challenged to write a grant proposal that would help their community. Students Peg Ramback of Bethlehem, Maygan Howard of St. Johnsbury, and Dawn Wise of Littleton did just that. Dawn Wise works at Walmart in Littleton and was aware of the company's community grant program, which supports worthwhile community endeavors. The trio's grant proposal was a request for funding to purchase three laptops. The goal was to make laptops available on loan to students without computers for use in class and on weekends when the college computer labs are closed.

"Some of our students struggle financially to keep up with the technology needs that come with a college education. This grant proposal provided practical help for students in achieving their academic goals," said Littleton Program Coordinator, Melanie Collins. On Wednesday, November 4th, Collins, Wise, and Ramback picked up three new Acer laptops from the Littleton Walmart store.

"Our entire college community is grateful to Walmart and to Peg, Maygan, and Dawn. What began as an academic exercise has become an important teaching lesson in how students help students and how the community helps students," added Collins.
