Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) Program

The Armed Forces offers soldiers, sailors, marines, guardsman, and airmen several programs to support their educational goals including up to 100% Tuition Assistance for college courses taken during off-duty hours.

Guardsman and Reservist:

  • Student must complete an on-line application through GoArmyEd
  • Student must complete an SOU (Statement of Understanding), must be signed by commander and uploaded into EFILE; once approved, apply for FTA
  • Must be approved prior to the start of classes (as early as 60 days prior)
  • Student must be accepted into a certificate or degree program
  • Student must upload copy of acceptance letter
  • Student must upload updated WMCC degree plan
  • Student must upload current semester schedule
  • Student must upload invoice of semester tuition costs, by class
  • Student must notify WMCC’s Bursar’s Office of FTA approval
  • Payment is treated as third party billing
  • FTA is dependent on passing grades (C or better); failure results in take-back of funding

Veterans Assistance Programs

Montgomery GI Bill ®

(chapter 30, 1606)

  • Student must have a NOBE (DD2384) Notice of Basic Eligibility (verified and signed by the State Montgomery GI Bill® Manager-Guard or Reserve Unit)
  • First time applying for MGIB benefits-complete a VA Form 22-1990 (process by mail or electronically)  use this link: https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/
  • Student must verify enrollment no earlier than the last day of each month and on the last date of the semester enrolled in the College
  • Monthly payment is to be treated as reimbursement to the student
  • Payment that will cover bill

Post 9/11 (Chapter 33)

  • First time applying for Post 9/11 – complete a VA Form 22-1990 (process electronically or by mail) use this link: https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/
  • Total months of active duty will determine percentage of education benefits – 40 to 100%; VA makes this determination
  • Admitted to a degree or certificate program use this link: https://sis.ccsnh.edu/PROD/bwskalog.P_DispLoginNon (allowed 2 semesters as a non-matriculated student)
  • Supply school with certificate of eligibility that shows months of eligibility and percentage of benefits
  • BAH eligibility – student must be 51% of full-time status; VA pays in arrears
  • Book stipend – VA pays up to $1,000 per year depending on percentage of eligibility; VA pays no sooner than two weeks prior to the start of the semester

  • Payment arrangements are needed unless 100% eligibility documentation is provided
  • $100 tuition deposit is not required if 100% eligibility documentation is provided

  • Need Veterans File Number (or social security number)

  • Payment-Student must pay up front, use installment payment plan, or be awarded financial aid that will cover bill

Vocational Rehabilitation Program (Chapter 31)

  • Disabled Veteran (training for workforce re-entry covers tuition, fees, books basic supplies and small stipend)

  • Form 28-1905 will be forwarded to the Certifying Official for Military Benefits in the Registrar’s Office at WMCC by the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Office the student is working with
  • Payment is treated as third party billing approved by the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Office
  • $100 tuition deposit is not required if authorization for the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Office is provided

NH National Guard Tuition Waiver Program

  • Must have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) use this link: https://fafsa.ed.gov/
  • Completion of Advanced Individual Training or Commissioning
  • Active member of the NH National Guard
  • Payment covers tuition only (not fees) and is treated as an exemption (waiver)
